Ten Years Ago Today: Netscape Launches mozilla.org
Today marks ten years since Netscape Communications Corporation launched mozilla.org to coordinate the open source development of the Netscape Communicator 5.0 source code, an endeavor that would later become known more broadly as the Mozilla project.
At the time, Netscape described mozilla.org as "a dedicated team within Netscape with an associated Web site that will promote, foster and guide open dialog and development of Netscape's client source code."
The actual release of the Netscape Communicator 5.0 source code took place a little over five weeks later on Tuesday 31st March 1998. The Netscape-backed mozilla.org continued to manage the Mozilla project until 2003, when an independent Mozilla Foundation was created as a non-profit organisation.
